Faculty of Law Universitas Airlangga is one of the oldest law faculties in Indonesia. Initially, the faculty was established in 1952 as a branch of the Faculty of Law University of Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta. However, with the establishment of Universitas Airlangga in 1954, which was inaugurated by the President of Republic Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno, Faculty of Law becomes one of the first three faculties of Universitas Airlangga. Two other faculties are Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry. Some of the leading legal scholars in Indonesia, including Prof. Mr. A.G. Pringgodigdo (State Secretary of the Republic of Indonesia in President Soekarno’s Cabinet), became the founder of the Faculty of Law Universitas Airlangga. Due to its high reputation in carrying out higher education in the field of law, since the 1970’s Faculty of Law Universitas Airlangga has been appointed by the Ministry of National Education as advisory board for the development of other law faculties in eastern Indonesia. The Faculty of Law Universitas Airlangga has a vision to become a leading, independent, innovative, and adaptive faculty of law in Asia, a pioneer in law education that produces graduates as professional jurists with high competence and morality.
To achieve the vision, the Faculty of Law Universitas Airlangga does not only depend on academic aspects but also equips students with skills in legal practice. Therefore, the Faculty of Law Universitas Airlangga applies law education curriculum that combines theory and practice in order to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of legal theory and practice. In addition, the Faculty of Law Universitas Airlangga also responds to the challenge of globalization by preparing students in facing new legal system. Faculty of Law Universitas Airlangga always strives to develop and renew the legal professional education through various trainings as well research in the field of law conducted by academic staff.
Currently, the Faculty of Law Universitas Airlangga manages four programs, namely: Bachelor Program in Law, Master’s Program in Law, Master’s Program in Notary Law, and Doctoral Program in Law. As an effort to meet international standard, the Bachelor Program in Law was certified by ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) in 2016 with the predicate of better than adequate indicating that the academic quality assurance system in the program is well implemented and fulfilling 15 criteria of AUN-QA.
The Institutional development programs in the next five years (2016-2020) are focused on: 1) international recognition; 2) improving the graduate’s quality; and 3) increasing the role of faculty units as revenue generating units. Six priority activities have been designed to implement the priority programs, namely: 1) increasing the number and quality of research with the target of publication in national and international journals; 2) opening international classes/programs and intensifying summer course programs; 3) strengthening Quality Assurance Team in each program to ensure the quality of academic implementation; 4) improving the quality of human resources both lecturers and educational staff; 5) improving the quality and capacity of facilities to support Tridharma activities; and 6) expanding collaborative networks with the Government, Private companies and Alumni to empower existing units in the Faculty to increase revenues.
